You printed a phone stand off a maker site, and it is wrong in one small, maddening way. The phone leans too far back and you are craning your neck. Or the cradle is too tight for your case, so the phone pops out when you pull it. Or the angle is fine but the charging port is buried, so you cannot dock and charge at the same time. Every one of those is a single dimension that was baked into a downloaded mesh you cannot touch.
A phone stand is one of the most rewarding parts to print because it is so simple, and one of the most annoying to get from someone else's file because "phone stand" is not one shape. It is a shape tuned to your phone's thickness, your case, your desk height, and how you use it. This guide walks through the four dimensions that actually decide whether a stand works: the lean angle, the cradle that holds the phone, the charging cutout, and the base that keeps it from tipping. Then it shows how to make each one a number you can change instead of a print you throw away.
What angle should a 3D printed phone stand be?
For general desk use, aim for about 65 to 70 degrees measured from the desk surface, which leans the phone back roughly 20 to 25 degrees from vertical. That is upright enough to read notifications and tap the screen without it feeling like it is falling away from you, and tilted back enough that it does not topple forward when you touch it.
The confusing part is that "angle" gets measured two different ways, and stand listings rarely say which. Measured from the desk (horizontal), 90 degrees is bolt upright and lower numbers lean it flatter. Measured from vertical, 0 degrees is upright and higher numbers lean it further back. A stand described as "25 degree tilt" and one described as "65 degrees" can be the exact same angle. Pick one reference and stick with it. Throughout this post, angle means degrees up from the desk.
Match the angle to what you do with the phone:

If you are not sure, start at 65 degrees. It is the angle most people land on after fiddling, and it is the one number you will most want to nudge after living with the stand for a day.
How deep and wide should the phone cradle be?
The cradle is the shallow tray the phone sits in, and its width has to match your phone's thickness with the case on, plus a little clearance so the phone drops in and lifts out without a fight. This is the number that most often makes a downloaded stand useless: it was sized for a naked phone or a different case.
Measure your phone at its thickest point with calipers, over the case, including any camera bump if the phone will rest against that edge. A naked modern phone is roughly 7 to 9 mm thick. With a typical case you are usually looking at 10 to 15 mm. Then size the cradle slot to that measured thickness plus about 1.5 to 2 mm of clearance so it is an easy fit, not a press fit. A phone you take in and out constantly should be looser than a bracket that bolts together once. Two more cradle numbers matter:
- Front lip height. The lip is the wall at the front of the tray that stops the phone sliding out. About 8 to 12 mm is the sweet spot: tall enough to hold the phone securely, short enough that it does not cover a chunk of the screen or block the bottom row of icons. Taller phones and heavier cases want the taller end of that range.
- Cradle depth (front to back). The tray only needs to be a few millimeters deeper than the phone plus case is thick, so the phone seats fully against the back rest. Too shallow and the phone wobbles; much deeper and you are wasting plastic and print time.
How do you add a charging cutout so you can charge while docked?
Cut a gap in the front lip and the base directly under the phone's charging port so the cable can plug in while the phone sits in the stand. On almost every phone the port is centered on the bottom edge, so the cutout goes in the middle, roughly 18 to 22 mm wide and tall enough to clear the plug housing.
A USB-C plug body is only about 12 mm wide and 6 mm tall, but the overmolded housing on a real cable is bigger, and a phone case narrows the opening further. Sizing the cutout at about 20 mm wide gives the fat end of a braided cable room without the phone slipping through the gap. Two ways to route the cable:
- A slot in the front lip: the simplest option. The cable comes up the front and plugs in. Works with any cable, easy to print, nothing overhangs.
- A hole through the back: cleaner look, cable hidden behind the stand. Leave the hole about 15 mm across so a plug fits through, and remember a hole in a vertical back wall prints as a bridge or a small overhang, so keep it modest or add a chamfer at the top.
Either way, keep the cutout centered. An off-center slot that lines up with your current phone will miss the port the day you upgrade.
How do you keep a phone stand from tipping over?
Give the base enough depth front to back that the phone's weight sits over the footprint, not past the back edge of it. A phone leaning back at 65 degrees puts its center of gravity behind the cradle, so if the base is too short the whole thing tips backward the moment you tap the top of the screen.
A reliable rule of thumb: make the base depth (front to back) at least about 60 to 70 percent of how tall the phone stands in the cradle, and make sure the back of the base reaches out under where the phone leans. A stand for a 150 mm-tall phone wants a base around 60 to 70 mm deep. If you want it lighter without losing stability, keep the footprint the same and hollow the underside, or move mass low and toward the back rather than shrinking the base.
Print orientation matters here too. If you print the stand standing up the way it is used, the layer lines run horizontally across the front lip, which is exactly where the phone pushes, and a thin lip can shear off along a layer. Printing the stand lying on its back, or flat on the base, usually puts the layers in a stronger direction for the lip and gives a cleaner front face. Which filament should you print a phone stand in?
PLA is fine for a stand that lives on an indoor desk, and it is the easiest to print. The one place PLA fails is heat: a stand left on a car dashboard or a sunny windowsill can soften and droop, because PLA starts to go soft around 50 to 60 degrees C and a closed car easily beats that. If the stand will ever sit in a hot car or direct sun, print it in PETG instead, which holds its shape to roughly 70 to 80 degrees C and is tougher if the stand gets knocked off the desk.
